Why I Don’t Include Quilt Patterns With My Quilt Kits.

It's a question I get asked from time to time. Why don't I sell quilt patterns alongside my quilt kits?

Before I explain why I don't include patterns with my quilt kits, it's probably worth mentioning that over the years I've received the occasional message from customers who were surprised to discover that their quilt kit didn't include a pattern. In most cases, they've simply missed the information in the product description, where I clearly state that patterns need to be purchased separately and directly from the pattern designer. One customer even told me they intended to leave a negative review because a pattern wasn't included. While feedback is always welcome, situations like this have reminded me that it's worth explaining the reasoning behind this approach and why it's something I choose to do intentionally rather than simply an oversight.

The short answer is that keeping things streamlined at my end helps keep my running costs down, and those savings can be passed on to you. Scribbly Gum Quilt Co operates from a very small studio, and every product I stock takes up valuable space. By focusing on curating fabrics, bundles, and quilt kits rather than carrying a large library of printed patterns, I'm able to keep things a little simpler behind the scenes. Thankfully, we're living in a digital age where purchasing a PDF quilt pattern is almost instant. In just a few clicks, you can have a pattern downloaded and ready to start planning your next project.

"I want to continue supporting the talented pattern designers whose work inspires so many of my kits."

But perhaps the biggest reason is that I want to continue supporting the talented pattern designers whose work inspires so many of my kits. When I direct you to a designer's website to purchase a pattern, it gives you the opportunity to explore everything else they have created. You might discover another pattern you love, sign up for their newsletter, or find inspiration for future projects. It's a small way of helping keep our quilting community thriving and ensuring that independent designers are properly supported for the work they do. Purchasing directly from a designer also helps ensure you're receiving a legitimate copy of their pattern from a reputable source.

Unfortunately, there are now countless fake websites using AI-generated content, scraping images, and stealing patterns from creators and designers. Buying directly from the source helps protect the people who spend countless hours designing, writing, testing, and refining the patterns we all enjoy making. At the end of the day, my goal is to curate beautiful fabric kits while supporting the wider quilting community wherever I can. Purchasing patterns directly from designers is one small way we can all help ensure those creative businesses continue to flourish.

Thank you for supporting not only Scribbly Gum Quilt Co, but also the wonderful designers who make this community such a special place to be.
